Hartford Job Corps Academy participates in Global Youth Service Day

On April 15th and 16th, students from the Hartford Job Corps Academy participated in the national initiative Global Youth Service Day sponsored by the local organization Our Piece of the Pie (OPP). On Friday students from the C.N.A. class volunteered at Avery Heights in Hartford, Conn., a multi-tiered retirement community. Working one-on-one with seniors who attend the adult day section of the complex, students helped them create personalized cards for the upcoming holiday.

Additionally on Friday, HJCA CPP classes helped Foodshare sort and pack various fruits and vegetables that will be sent to local food shelters, while other HJCA students put their physical and technological expertise to the test during a fun filled Wii bowling game competition against seniors at the Avon Senior Center. Much to their chagrin our students quickly discovered that youth and being savvy at computer games doesn’t necessarily add up to winning, as the seniors mustered up the agility and skill to beat several of the students, the oldest senior of which was ninety-five!

Students from Intermediate Studies volunteered at the American School for the Deaf where they participated in an assembly, did spring clean-up around the grounds and learned to communicate through sign language.

On April 16th, HJCA students in collaboration with the Lutz Museum in Manchester, Conn. volunteered at the Oak Grove Nature Center where they helped with the preparation of the area by getting the trails ready for hikers and assisting with various painting projects. The Nature Center houses Connecticut’s official groundhog.

Eight students volunteered to work alongside members of the Ebony Horse Woman, a non-profit organization whose mission is to work with inner city youth helping them to learn positive behaviors through the use of horses. Working alongside the organization’s members, the students helped with spring clean-up on the farm along with painting their new goat house.
