Brick by Brick
The Westover Brick Masonry trade repaired the Fire Station in downtown Chicopee, Massachusetts to re-point worn areas on the corner of the building. Students worked with their instructor Robert Marion for a week, ensuring that the red brick structure was in tip top shape. The Fire Department actively works with Westover to promote careers in public safety, to volunteer in the community, to promote employer partnerships and to encourage youth to enroll. The Department recently supported Safe & Sound Week working with our Safety Officer. We ran into them again at our Clinical Nursing site, enjoying a BBQ lunch with the elderly residents. We always get a big smile and kind words.
Helping the Homeless
Westover volunteers staffed the donation table at Six Flags, Springfield, MA on National Roller Coaster Day. We packed a Peter Pan Bus with school supplies and then spent a week sorting them and preparing backpacks for homeless schoolchildren. A total of 2000 backpacks were donated to area schools. The Westover students rode the bus and delivered the backpacks to the schools. The backpacks were sorted by grade level. Other local employers and volunteers joined in. The “Stuff the Bus” campaign is sponsored by United Way.
Westover Carpentry Trade in the Community
The Westover Carpentry trade built an outdoor storage shed for the Granby Massachusetts High School. The construction firm Fontaine Brothers invited the students in with their instructor Mike O’Neal to help out.
National Night Out
Congressman Richard Neal with the Westover Y2Y representatives at the 2018 National Night Out in Chicopee MA. Together with Coca Cola and dozens of sponsors, Westover served on the event committee to produce this major family friendly event in Sarah Jane park. Our group promoted violence prevention, read stories to children at the mobile library and held an admissions information table.
Peace in in the Palm of Our Hands
After helping renovate Adams Park in Springfield, Westover learned the location was picked for Nancy Lieberman’s 65th Dream Court. A delegation attended the ribbon cutting celebrating a brand new basketball court donated by basketball legend Nancy Lieberman. The Dream Court is a place to bring local youth and the Springfield Police Department together. The slogan is “Peace is in the Palm of our Hands”. Westover has done outreach for Y2Y and admissions in this park. Student volunteers from Carpentry and Y2Y landscaped and renovated the entrance to the park and the pavilion. The City re-built the water park, and the new basketball court brought everything to a whole new level.
