The chilly temperatures didn’t keep away the 48 employers, colleges, 500 high school students, and 40 local job seekers from the community from showing up for the Carl D. Perkins Job Corps College/Job Fair. This was the largest college/job fair held at the center yet. In addition to students from Perkins Job Corps, students from Betsy Layne High School, Prestonsburg High School, Magoffin County High School, Letcher County High School, Pikeville Independent, Carl D. Perkins Vocational Rehab, the Department of Veterans Affairs, Alice Lloyd College, American National University, Anthem, Big Sandy Community & Technical College, Big Sandy Community Education, Big Sandy Health Care, College Access Counselors, Eastern KY University, First Commonwealth Bank, Floyd Co. Extension Office, Floyd County Health Dept., Humana Care Source, Judi’s Place for Kids, Kings Daughters Medical Center, KY Career Center, Big Sandy CAP, Frontier Gas, KY Office of the Blind, ,KYVGB Family Program, Lindsey Wilson College, McDonalds of East KY, Morehead State Small Business ,Morehead State University, Mountain Comprehensive Care, Northeast KCC, South East KY Area Health Center, Sr. Community Services Employment Program, Transamerica Agency Network, U.S., Army, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Marines, University of KY, US Big Sandy Prison, Walmart, Western Construction, Bimbo Bakers, Social Security Administration, Mountain Manor of Paintsville, Kentucky State Police, KY Spin, AT&T, Bellevue College, Floyd County Board of Education and Superintendent of Floyd County Schools, Danny Adkins, attended the event.
Visitors had the opportunity to talk with representatives from colleges, universities and employers and see hands-on training demonstrations from the Perkins Job Corps Electrical, Carpentry and Facilities Maintenance classes. Visitors also talked with security students as they assisted with checking in and parking cars. The students did demonstrations on various skills, center tours were also offered throughout the day.
The job fair truly was a center-wide effort as Perkins Job Corps Culinary and Office Administration students were busy signing in guests and preparing a first-class lunch for the vendors.
The biannual Perkins Job Corps College/Career Fair has become the biggest such event in the area. The fair gives students the opportunity to network with various employers and colleges with programs that match their career paths as well as explore new career options.
