ACSA student works through Spring break

ACSA student, Sam Shemwell started on a work-based learning assignment at Quiet Logistics in Devens, Massachusetts in January. He is originally from Illinois but was able to remain in the area during this Spring break to be able to continue working. This entire opportunity may very well increase the chance for permanent placement. WBL coordinator, Ms. Schultz received great feedback with many positive comments from the supervisor during this assignment.
Sam started his trade education at the Paul Simon Chicago Job Corps and completed the Computer Technician trade first then became an AT transfer to Shriver Job Corps for the Advanced Computer Tech trade in May, 2019.

CNA completor shares her feelings in a letter

Dear Ms. Lawrence....I am working full time at Academy Manor in Andover, Massachusetts.  I have been working really hard and a lot of hours during this COVID-19 crisis.  We have not had anyone in our building with it so far and we are taking every precaution.  I am...

CNA completor continuing medical education

At the age of only 17, Kiana Estrada completed her CNA trade in December, 2019 at Shriver Job Corps in Devens, Massachusetts. Thereafter she enrolled and was accepted to the ACT program attending a local community college. Her hopes were to continue education in the medical field and was granted her wish by being accepted to Bay Path University for the fall semester in the Health Science Program. This University is a highly-selective, private all-women’s college.

One of a kind – First responder

In such trying times that all health care facilities are facing, we have our very own Marcos Vargas stepping to the plate filling in many hours on the job. Marcos is an AT transfer from the Cassadaga Job Corps in New York earning his CNA certification first then transferring to Shriver Job Corps in Devens, Massachusetts for the advanced trade of Transportation Communication Union in June of 2019. His ambition includes falling back on his first trade for employment while his education continues in this second trade. On the 16th of March all Shriver students were sent back home which was concerning for Marcos and the Apple Valley Center where he works in Ayer, Massachusetts. As much as he wanted to stay in the area to be able to work, the staff at the facility wanted and needed him. After many hours of scrambling for answers, arrangements were made and Marcos has worked just about every day since!

Carpentry student nominated for “Boot Award”

After many months of participating on a work-based learning assignment, Jahneazia Villar-Acevedo (Yaya) scored a permanent placement at the Fitchburg Housing Authority in Massachusetts. Originally from the Virgin Islands she arrived to Shriver Job Corps in September of 2018 and completed the trade of Carpentry in October of 2019. Recently she was nominated for a “Boot Award” by her trade instructor, Duane Bastarache for “a successful woman in a non-traditional trade.” “Taking advantage of a great opportunity” was a statement made by her supervisor, Mr. Doug Carpenter. Mr. Bastarache stated “she was the only one worthy of a full time position, I wasn’t surprised in the least. She was the first one I thought of.” Yaya was asked what made her come to Job Corps and she responded, “the fact that you have a free education and that she isn’t a college person. She was going to go straight to work but preferred to get a title so she thought of carpentry. She found herself needing to get out of her comfort zone, but “I did it” she stated! Her advice for another female considering a non-traditional trade would be “don’t be scared” to try. You will have many buddies to help you through and lastly, “don’t be afraid to do what guys do, because we’re strong too”!
