On Wednesday, December 1, 2010 Nickey Murray, Personnel Manager at Walmart’s Bowie location visited Woodstock to speak to the Retail Sales, Data Entry and Security trade students. Murray, a former Job Corps student, first started at Walmart 16 years ago as a cashier with all intentions of staying only one year. Sixteen years later as a Personnel Manager, Murray is a prime example that “there is a career in Walmart if you choose.”
Murray spoke to Woodstock students about the benefits of working for Walmart such as from day one on the job you can have stock ownership in the company if you so choose, after one year employees are eligible for a 401(k) program and after six months in the position, employees can transfer to Sam’s Club which is associated with the company.
Currently, Walmart is doing temporary seasonal hiring for the holidays but is always in need of cashiers, weekend help and truck drivers. Several former Job Corps students who worked as temps at her location have now been hired on permanent staff, said Murray.
Murray said she understands that not everyone sees Walmart as their future, however, she urges students to get the work experience and “if it’s your stepping stone use it to your advantage. Make a lasting impression.”
