Sims completed the Certified Medical Assistant program at Whitney M. Young Jr. Job Corps in December 2019, receiving certifications for Certified Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy, EKG and Patient Care Technician.
In her position with the Clinic for Infectious Diseases, she is experiencing first-hand the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. “I try to help in any was possible, from educating patients on the virus to helping nurses get their PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) on and running tests to the lab” while performing her normal clinic duties, such as handling prescription refill requests and checking patients into rooms. She also has been trained to conduct telehealth, which allows patients to connect with medical personnel to get medical care and advice in their homes rather than having to come to the clinic.
“Every day I get to come to work and help my patients through their good and bad days,” Sims said. “I do my best every day to help my patients as best as I can, especially through these tough times. I am not the kind of person who quits when it gets hard. I have co-workers and most importantly patients who depend on me. I do it for them.”
