When Dylan Wohlrab came to Job Corps in 2019, the world was a very different place.

However, a little bit of pandemic couldn’t stop him from graduating and going on to advanced training.

Though Wohlrab is nervous about moving to a different state and being on his own for the first time, he’s ready for his journey. Next stop: Gary Job Corps Center in San Marcos, Texas for advanced training in cement masonry.

“That’s where my journey begins,” he said. “I’ve just got to get out there.”

When Wohlrab completes his advanced training, it will open even more doors – and both his carpentry and cement instructors think he’ll excel.

Darryel Gaines, Cement Masonry instructor, noted that he was involved in eight or nine projects across campus before even formally becoming a student there.

“He loved what he was doing. He was interested, he caught on quick,” Gaines said. “His confidence built up very quickly when he was in here.”

Both noted Wohlrab’s leadership qualities.

“He made it up to shop foreman,” said Steve Rusch, Whitney M. Young’s Carpentry instructor.

Gaines agreed.

“He can listen and give feedback,” said. “People look up to him and think he’s very wise.”

And Wohlrab’s self-motivated nature further adds to that – and Gaines expects it to take him far in life.

“I expect him to do great things in the future,” he said. “I expect him somewhere along the line to start his own company. I do believe he has that in him.”
