ASU and Turner Job Corps team up to help students

ALBANY, GA — From a press release by Albany State University:

Students at Albany State University will have a new walkway on campus thanks to a partnership with Turner Job Corps. Students in the Turner Job Corps Concrete Finishing Class have volunteered their time and talent to construct a new sidewalk on the ASU campus.

The project, a joint venture between the two institutions, will give Turner students some real world practical experience, while providing convenience for ASU students, said James Oliver, director of Facilities Management at ASU. The sidewalk will allow students walking to and from the newly opened residence halls 5 and 6 to avoid taking a longer route to get to class.

“This new walkway will give the students a more direct route to their classes without problems on rainy days,” Oliver said. “Since the new residence halls were opened in August we’ve had a number of requests from students for a more direct route to the Pedestrian Mall and the HPER Building.”

When completed, the new sidewalk will connect residence halls 5 and 6 to the ACAD Building, the Pedestrian Mall and the HPER Gymnasium. Students from the Turner Job Corps Center said the experience is valuable and that it’s the best learning.

“Joe Walker, instructor for concrete finishing at Turner Job Corps, is directing the student workers,” said Oliver. “ASU is supplying all of the materials and providing food and refreshments for the student workers.”
