Last week, several students and staff drawn from
TIJCC’s Solar, Advanced & Basic Culinary, and Construction Trades programs highlighted new green skills learned as part of the “Go Green” event held on center. The event was covered by 106 KMEL, a popular radio station in the Bay Area.
The event highlighted students talking about the benefits of Treasure Island Job Corps, superior skills learned, and new skills gained. Gifted
TIJCC Carpentry Instructor, Jack Reisner spoke of how his Carpentry students had incorporated green strategies in the classroom. Three of his trainees spoke about the valuable cross-training experiences gained by working on the farm. Two of veteran Solar Instructor Tom Huggett’s brand new solar trainees (INCLUDING our very first female solar trainee, Kimberly Cole) spoke about the importance of Solar energy. Culinary trainees spoke about how they’re using the valuable training received from working on the farm in their trade including new skill sets such as seasonal menu planning based on farm produce. Finally, TIJCC’s Urban Farm Coordinator, Corey Block spoke about the labor of love that is our wonderful Michelle Obama Green Acre – from preparing, to planting, to praying (for good weather!) and now PRODUCE!!! The event concluded with a delightful tour of the farm and a sampling of some of the lovely fresh produce.
