Security trainee, Yousef Al-Balouchi, has recently been working in the Welcome Booth at Treasure Island Job Corps on a Work-Based Learning assignment. He has enjoyed the responsibilities and high expectations that go along with working in the Welcome Booth. Utilizing the work ethic and public relations skills he has acquired through his security trade classes has allowed him to be successful in his WBL assignment. One of Yousef’s favorite aspects of working in the Welcome Booth has been interacting with every guest who visits Treasure Island Job Corps. According to Yousef, his “role is to help everyone feel at ease and, at the same time, make sure that security protocols are followed by everyone coming through.”
Yousef has also benefitted from the opportunity to experience a real-life work setting while having a support system that reinforces his training. The work-based learning structure has helped prepare Yousef as he looks forward to entering a career in the security field. Effective communication and organization are two of the most important attributes that Yousef has improved upon during his WBL assignment. Working in the Welcome Booth has provided him the opportunity to develop these traits while learning how to handle difficult situations. This has allowed Yousef to gain insight into his duties and responsibilities as well as his customer service and communication skills. Yousef also wanted to provide some perspective to security trainees going forward into WBL assignments or job opportunities. He advised that having a professional demeanor and paying attention to detail are necessary to effectively gauge each situation in order to react or adapt appropriately.
