TONGUE POINT JOB CORPS CENTER ANNOUNCES RESULTS OF RECENT PROJECT TO BATTLE HOMELESSNESS

Tongue Point Job Corps Center is proud to report that we have provided several pounds of food, blankets, coats, socks and a check for $500.00 to Filling Empty Bellies, as well as blankets and comforters to the Astoria Warming Center.
According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, in 2020 on any given night, 580,466 people experienced homelessness in the United States. Families with children make up 30 percent of the homeless population.
This was the last of four service projects the Tongue Point Job Corps Center spearheaded this year in celebration of Management & Training Corporation’s (MTC) 40th anniversary! Here are the service projects we were privileged to complete this year:
1st quarter – Improved literacy by partnering with Lucy’s Books to collect and donate a new book to every Lewis & Clark Elementary school student, totaling over 570 books.
2nd quarter – Battled hunger by hosting a recycling event for bottles and cans, raising over $5000 for Columbia Senior Diners, a meal preparation and delivery program for senior citizens.
3rd quarter – Raised awareness of mental health by raising and donating $1000.00 to Clatsop County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), whose services provide advocates to children who have experienced abuse or neglect.
4th quarter – Rallied staff and the community to collect food and warming supplies for the unhoused community at Filling Empty Bellies and the Astoria Warming Center. Blankets, coats and shelf stable food were greatly appreciated and timely in the needs of the community.
MTC was founded in 1981with a mission to help at-risk, underserved men and women change their lives through education, job training, and life skills.
“We want to deeply thank our staff and community partners for helping us make a social impact in our community this year,” says Center Director, Kimberley Zufelt, “It’s been so rewarding to invest in our community. We have great people in this area and look forward to contributing to other worthy causes in the future.”
