Tongue Point Job Corps students are working on increasing their community service and community participation.
Tongue Point Job Corps Certified Medical Assisting (CMA) students working with the Red Cross conducted a blood drive on December 6th on center for students and staff. This was the first blood drive since 2019.
There were originally seventy-two donors scheduled but that number was well exceeded with students alone.
Noe Goyou, a CMA student commented, “As a first-time donor, I was very nervous. They answered my questions and explained the process very well. The draw itself was quick and painless and they took very good care of me afterwards.”
CMA Instructor, Robbin O’Grady said, “The goal was to collect 33 usable pints of blood, 53 pints were received which was 160% of our original goal. This is projected to save at least 159 lives.”
Sophia George, a CMA student stated “It was a great opportunity to work with professionals in the medical field, as volunteers we students learned a lot that day.”
“I learned patience and leadership and it also taught me a lot about blood types.” said CMA student, Brittany Strevy.
CMA students practice blood draws on Phlebotomy Venipuncture Practice Arms before moving on to learning and practicing on an act ual person.
