Takana, 21, is from Vancouver, WA. She completed the Finance & business curriculum, earning Microsoft certifications. In March 2010 she represented TPJCC students in Washington, DC at meetings with Senators Merkley and Wyden as well as Rep. Wu’s staff. She was selected as one of two students to address the Job Corps Congressional breakfast. She shared: “…I was earning a 3+GPA at the International High School in Eugene – until my father died. My Mom’s illnesses kept her from working; the only income was social security and food stamps. We moved 9 times in 2 years and my GPA fell to a D. Juggling school and a part-time job, I was drained and stressed. Despite my poor GPA, I wanted to go to college; but, I was afraid to even think about student loans. Job after dead end job, I worked thinking that I could work my way up to a career I would be happy with. One afternoon, while applying for jobs online and watching the Tyra Banks show, I saw a commercial about Job Corps and called. When I was assured I wouldn’t be going into debt, I figured I had nothing to lose…”
Takana has served on her Dorm Council and was elected two terms to Student Government Association Vice President. TPJCC staff describes Takana as honorable, considerate, impressive, role-model, enthusiastic, diligent, and one who is an effective leader. Having accomplished so much in less than 17 months, Takana has now entered Clatsop CC through TPJCC Advanced Career Training. |
