Many Connections Make a Strong Partnership

Tongue Point Job Corps Center has had a longstanding relationship with the Astoria Senior Center. The first Saturday of each month is Senior Center day for community service; students spend four to six hours interacting with their ‘grandparents for a day’ – playing pool, doing crosswords or puzzles, being taught crafts, or just talking and sharing experiences. More than one English second language student has improved their skills through their conversations at the Senior Center.

Some years ago, TPJCC painting vocation painted the inside of the Senior Center; last year the Center asked for us to consider painting outside. Several groups were coordinated to get the job done. Because weeds had almost halfway up the side of the building, an extra Saturday community service was arranged to clean it away. The students of the facilities maintenance vocation spent several days powerwashing and prepping the building. Finally, the painting students spent the better part of a week giving the building its new two tone finish. Along the way, they received ample advice from several senior sidewalk superintendants – giving them the opportunity to practice their customer service skills.

Annually, the TPJCC culinary students prepare and serve the food for the Senior Center’s annual open house .

The seniors make it well known about town that they think Tongue Point Job Corps Center students take good care of them and how much they appreciate our students’ work.
