Springdale Job Corps Hosts High School and Youth Program Counselors

While it may seem like the school year just started, high school counselors are already thinking ahead to the programs and opportunities available to students after they graduate. Every fall Springdale Job Corps Center invites high school career counselors out to learn about the training programs available and to take a tour of the center.
This year the open house was held at 9am on Thursday, November 14th. Several staff members gave a presentation on what Springdale offers and how the Job Corps youth program could benefit young people who are hands on learners or may not be ready for a college career. “Job Corps is great for students not quite sure about college,” Ulsted said. “It gives them a chance to learn some of the skills they’ll need to succeed in life, whether they choose to move directly in to a career or go on to higher education. DESI was on hand to talk about their role in recruitment and career transition services and to answer questions about eligibility.
Counselors and staff from Reynolds, Gresham Barlow, Portland, and Hood River County school districts, as well as representatives from Youth in Progress and Worksource Oregon, came out to visit Springdale and see first hand what the program offers. “Job Corps will be 50 years old in 2014,” Ulsted continued. “Clearly there continues to be a need for programs offering career and technical training.”
After the presentation, staff provided tours of the center to the visitors to give them an opportunity to see firsthand the living and education environment offered on center.
