One of the many programs offered by Springdale Job Corps Center is Advanced Career Training. This program is college-based, with students continuing to live on-center while they attend classes at Mount Hood Community College. Two students will start the next step in their training during winter term.
Health Occupations student Zack Cota is excited about this next step. “I’ll take my CNA test and then start the step in the process to becoming a nurse,” he says. “This is exciting and I’m really glad I have this opportunity.”
April Helm is completing Office Administration and is ready to get even more education. “I really feel like this is a boost up. Not everyone gets to go to college with the kind of support I will and I appreciate it a lot.”
Students who are interested in participating in the ACT program are required to take classes on what to expect in college, how to handle financial aid, and to get an idea of what is needed outside the classroom. Career Development Services manager Danny Stoddard wants students to know what they’re getting in to. “It’s a time commitment, both inside the classroom and outside. There’s a lot that goes in to being a college student!”
In addition to the college prep class, students are required to fill out an application and go through an interview to determine if they’re ready for college. “There are only five ACT slots available, so it is competitive,” Danny continues. “We want to make sure the students who apply are ready and are willing to put in the work.”
All students who are part of the ACT program have completed all their training and any other requirements before they are accepted. Students will live on center and are still considered Job Corps participants.
