Springdale students and staff didn’t just celebrate Earth Day, they celebrated April as Earth Month! Although Springdale’s “Green Team” is active on center all year round, the team took April as an opportunity for education and outreach on center and in the community about environmental issues. The Green Team shared information for all staff and students through a Power Point presentation about recycling, and also held a special “Films with Flavor” showing of An Inconvenient Truth. Students partnered with Portland Parks and Recreation to clear trail heads, and also volunteered with Portland bicycle enthusiasts as the Bike Street Festival, which promoted cycling as an alternative to commuting by car. Other activities included working at the Johnson Creek Watershed to plant a community garden, and volunteering with the Gresham Library at their Earth Day Recycled Books Fair. All in all, students contributed over 200 hours, most of which were during weekends and evenings, of service to the community to celebrate Earth Month in April.
