SJCC Students Join Asian Pacific American Network of Oregon in State Capitol

On February 15th, students from Springdale Job Corps Center joined the Asian Pacific American Network of Oregon (APANO) in Salem, Oregon to represent the Asian Pacific American population of Oregon to State legislators. This was the 7th annual Legislative Day organized by APANO. Legislative Day is a way for members of the Asian Pacific American community to have their voices heard by lawmakers and put the issues facing Asian Americans in Oregon in front of the people who represent them.

According to Office Administration student, Melody Soda, this was an excellent way to get involved with an organization that represents her and her community. “It was interesting to go to Salem and talk to the representatives. I learned a lot about what’s important to APANO and I met really nice people.”

As part of their visit, Melody, Rashaun Ogo, Veronica Primero, Chelsea Mangebuch, and Randy Phay joined over 100 other members of the community to meet with State senators and representatives, talked about how to improve outcomes for Asian Pacific Americans in Oregon, and discussed healthcare options for families.

Career Development Services Manager Danny Stoddard arranged the trip for the students. “I thought it was an important way for students in this population to get involved with the democratic process and get hands on experience with our legislators,” he said. “It was a fun experience for everyone!”

Involving students in advocacy activities is an important part of teaching them about their community and the influence they can have on outcomes; both in their own lives and their families’ lives, leading to stronger communities.
