On Friday, June 28th, Springdale Job Corps students and staff held their annual “Junkyard Golf” day – a celebration of recycling, art, and fun. Students and staff were tasked with the job of turning the campus into “putt putt” golf style green, but the catch was they could only use junk material to create their golf holes.
There were 11 golf holes altogether, including holes created by students in trade, as well staff from other department. Students used a variety of junk in construction including old car fenders, broke pieces of chain, a dilapidated sled, wires, cardboard, and siding. Protective Services students with a Western theme, complete with a covered wagon, while golf balls at the Auto Body Repair trade actually followed a path that took them inside and through a broken down car. Students and staff spent the afternoon golfing each hole, and were then able to vote for the holes with the “Best Theme” and the “Best Use of Junk”.
Springdale hosts the event on center annually, as a way to promote creativity, preservation of the environment, cost efficiency, and lots and lots of fun.
