South Bronx Job Corps Academy Newcomers Initiative Event on January 27, 2024

The South Bronx Job Corps Academy Culinary Arts students get the opportunity throughout their training at the center to prepare, present, and serve high-quality entrees and desserts to our guests.

In preparation for the Newcomers Initiative Event on January 27th of this year hosted by collaborating managers Grant Associates and Career Systems Development, our students prepared a wide range of mouthwatering Italian-inspired entrees for our guests to enjoy. From fettuccini alfredo to farfalle with pesto, penne ala vodka sauce, or even homemade meatballs, the gymnasium quickly began to smell like a family-owned Italian restaurant.

The free Culinary Arts training offered at our center allows students to earn industry-recognized credentials to become a Certified Culinarian, Certified Chef, and other restaurant certifications. The starting hourly salary is around $16.00/hour. Students can also earn a state-issued learner’s permit and driver’s license upon completion of the program.

Throughout the program, South Bronx Job Corps Academy Culinary Arts students receive the following training:
• Hands-on training from professionals and working directly with food and beverages in the kitchen
• Use a variety of commercial cooking equipment and tools
• Prepare and cook for on-center events and guests
• Work with dining staff to develop new recipes and plan menus for students living at the center
• Attend field trips and networking opportunities at industry-related businesses and organizations around New York
• Gain familiarity with inventory protocol, knife skills, handling raw foods, kitchen safety, plating, and more
