Throughout the first three months of 2024, Business and Community Liaison, Beth Gardner from Grant Associates worked purposefully to acquire new work-based learning partnerships with companies and organizations located in the Northern Manhattan and Bronx locations. The ten new collaborations obtained during that quarter at the South Bronx Job Corps Academy (SBJCA) would allow students to receive hands-on experience as an internship within the trade they are currently studying.
The center’s Career Transition Specialist (CTS) team Ineke Murray and Reggie Barnes, worked directly with the students to create resumes, schedule interviews then place them in internship and full-time positions.

Rising Ground: Gabriela Foerster, Employee Experience Specialist shown below, and her team at Rising Ground Inc. established a two-way street partnership with the South Bronx Job Corps Academy. Our students studying within the construction and maintenance program are now able to receive internship hands-on experience before earning their trade certificate and graduating from the program.
.Balance Choice Care provided our student Alexandra Wilkinson studying in the South Bronx Job Corps Academy Healthcare program with a CMA internship position.
Bronx Works hired South Bronx Job Corps Academy Culinary students Jamal Lambert shown here and Shakera Bright (show below). Jamal applies his skills to prepare meals for individuals and families in need throughout the borough.
Our free-of-cost Culinary Arts training allows our students to earn industry-recognized credentials to become a Certified Culinarian, Certified Chef, and other restaurant certifications. The starting hourly salary is around $16.00/hour. Students can also earn a state-issued learner’s permit and driver’s license upon completion of the program.

· Hands-on training from professionals and working directly with food and beverages in the kitchen
· Use a variety of commercial cooking equipment and tools
· Prepare and cook for on-center events and guests
· Work with dining staff to develop new recipes and plan menus for students living in the center
· Attend field trips and networking opportunities at industry-related businesses and organizations around New York
· Gain familiarity with inventory protocol, knife skills, handling raw foods, kitchen safety, plating, and more
