South Bronx Job Corps Culinary Arts Program

Homemade strawberry shortcake was just one of the culinary tasty desserts made by our very own students for the Newcomers Initiative Event in January 2024 located at the South Bronx Job Corps Academy. The event was hosted by collaborating managers Grant Associates and Career Systems Development (CSD).

The South Bronx Job Corps Academy free-of-cost Culinary Arts training allows our students to earn industry-recognized credentials to become a Certified Culinarian, Certified Chef and other restaurant certifications. Starting hourly salary is around $16.00/hour. Students can also earn a state-issued learner’s permit and driver’s license upon completion of the program.

Throughout the program, South Bronx Job Corps Academy Culinary Arts students receive the following training:

  • Hands-on training from professionals and work directly with food and beverages in the kitchen.
  • Use a variety of commercial cooking equipment and tools.
  • Prepare and cook for on-center events and guests.
  • Work with dining staff to develop new recipes and plan menus for students living on center.
  • Attend field trips and networking opportunities at industry related businesses and organizations around New York.
  • Gain familiarity with inventory protocol, knife skills, handling raw foods, kitchen safety, plating and more.

Culinary Arts Career Opportunities: Most Culinary Arts graduates go to work full time in the food service industry, often for restaurants and catering services or for institutions such as schools, hospitals or cafeterias. You may be required to work during early mornings, late evenings, weekends and holidays. Students should also consider pursuing the Advanced Culinary Arts, Advanced Culinary Arts – Pastry and other Advanced Training programs at Job Corps as part of their career pathway.
