On Sunday, August 26, 2012, Sierra Nevada Job Corps Center’s Career Technical Training Manager Sheilah Hernandez was recognized at the Reno Aces baseball game for her contribution to the youth of Nevada. The recognition came during a segment sponsored by United Healthcare held at various games to spotlight people who make a positive impact on the northern Nevada community. Hernandez was nominated by a community member who knew of her longtime contributions to youth. The following transcript was presented during the baseball game.
“United Healthcare is recognizing Sheilah Hernandez today! Sheilah works at Sierra Nevada Job Corps, a no-cost education and career technical training program that helps young people ages 16-24 improve the quality of their lives through career technical and academic training. In more than 15 years of service, Sheilah has held a number of positions, including Student Government Advisor, Recreation Advisor, Residential Coordinator, Senior Career Counselor, Outreach Admissions & Career Transitions Services Manager, Recreation Manager, and she is currently the Career Technical Training Manager. Sheilah assists students in realizing their potential, and helps them to reach their educational and career goals, through one on one counseling, mentoring and encouragement. A wife to Francisco, and a mother to Leo, Sheilah emphasizes the importance of family and team values in her work noting that “many of her students come from rough backgrounds, but each and every one starts with a clean slate, and is given the opportunity to shine.”
