Sierra Nevada Job Corps Students Win in Global Competition

Sierra Nevada Job Corps Center’s (SNJCC) Office Administration students have won the 2011 IC3 World Cup Competition, placing first in the entire United States.  The global competition, run by IT exam certification company Certiport, had participants from Asia, the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The “Sierra Nevada Office Assistants” team had 64 SNJCC students who competed and became certified, helping the team win the Workforce Development and/or Government sector regional category.  The team has now won this category three years in a row and even managed to double the number of points earned between the 2010 and 2011 competitions.

For student Jason Lusak, winning the competition is a great payoff for his team’s efforts, but he and many of his teammates are more excited by the doors earning their certification has opened.  “My IC3 certification will help me get a job and make my resume more professional,” Lusak said.  “My certification is global and is accepted worldwide, so I have the ability to move anywhere in the world.”

The competition judges teams on the number of team members who become certified in IC3, an internet and core computer certification program.  Students must learn about computer hardware, software, networks, and the Internet and take three individual exams.  SNJCC is extremely proud of the team’s third-year win because of all the hard work and dedication put in by the students and staff.

“To win a global competition like this three years in a row and also continue to improve the team’s score is no small feat,” SNJCC Center Director Ken Dugan said.  “The efforts of these students represent everything our center is about – education, achievement and employment.”

The students will receive a plaque and winners t-shirts from the global competition.  They will also celebrate their win with a barbecue.
