Sierra Nevada Helps Fight Hunger

Not everyone can say they’ve built a castle. However, six SNJCC students can tell you they’ve been there, done that AND gotten the t-shirt. The CANstruction building team at SNJCC built a giant white castle this year for the annual design and building competition. CANstruction, organized by the American Institute of Architects Northern Nevada Chapter, is actually a creative benefit for charity. Teams build giant sculptures out of canned and packaged foods, which later get donated to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. The food donation is extremely helpful to the Food Bank during the slower months after the Winter donation rush.

While you may not be able to live in the castle the students built, you could almost walk through it – the structure was a whopping 7 feet, 11inches tall and close to 9 feet wide! The castle was built from 3,730 cans of sweet peas, green beans, and even a few cans of corn.

SNJCC thanks architect Pete Dube of The Dube Group and Wal-Mart on Kietzke Lane for helping support our team!
