On September 17 Shriver Job Corps participated in the United Way’s annual Day of Caring. The day started with a breakfast and inspirational presentation about the mission of the United Way. The local United Way has many initiatives that provide food and support services for families in need in the North Central Massachusetts area. During the breakfast Shriver was recognized for having one of the largest groups of volunteers this year.
Students reported to the Fitchburg Historical Society and the Page Hilltop Elementary school in Ayer. At the playground students raked mulch, pulled weeds, painted play surfaces and painted some of the inspirational words the school uses to encourage the children. We were given free creative reign and the students painted some beautiful pictures they drew on the pavement as well. The staff at the Page Hill Top received us warmly and provided us with more water and delicious food than we could eat! Student Junisa Feliz said, “I love this place! I love the food and I love all the people here!”
Many of the students asked if they could come back and help again.
At the end of the day, the tired crew reported to the celebration barbeque at the Polish American Center in Gardner. Many of the students won door prizes! It was a great way to end a productive Day of Caring.
