On Friday, September 24, Shriver celebrated Mrs. Eunice Shriver Kennedy and the fantastic works that she conducted during her lifetime, including founding. Shriver students and staff participated in a Tournament Challenge Day.
Mrs. Shriver Kennedy was married to Sargent Shriver, former Director of the Peace Corps and the man whom Shriver JCC is named after. Mrs. Shriver Kennedy passed away on August 11, 2009.
Activities conducted on Tournament day were themed around students learning how to cope with physical or intellectual disabilities. Some of the activities were South Paw Dodge Ball where students were only allowed to use their left hand to play. Another activity was one-legged ping pong tournament. Additional activities included a pool tournament, chess tournament, a one-armed tug of war between students and staff (students won!) and a Wii Fitness tournament.
Students were treated to a BBQ lunch for the day and continued activities until it was time for Bus Out. Through these activities, students learned how it felt to live with an obstacle that they needed to overcome, something that Eunice Shriver Kennedy always helped others to do. Students hope to conduct more outreach to Best Buddies and Special Olympics in the future to continue to honor Mrs. Shriver Kennedy.
