A Face of Job Corps: John, 21-years old, Louisiana

When John enrolled at the Shreveport Job Corps Center , he had  obtained his high school diploma but had  not developed a plan for his career goals.  Quiet and shy, John acknowledged that he needed to develop confidence in himself and his abilities.  Job Corps provided John with the atmosphere to cultivate his social skills as well as his career path.  During the program, he completed Office Administration Career Technical Training and:

  • Served as a Non-Residential Vice President  of the Student Government Association
  • Joined Toastmasters International to enhance oratory skills
  • Was elected Sergeant at Arms in Toastmasters’  Eagle Club #4819
  • Obtained the “Competent Communicator  Award” and “Competent Leader Award”
  • Graduated from Shreveport Job Corps Center in 2009
  • Enrolled at Career Technical College  to pursue an Associate degree in Business
  • Has maintained a 3.5 GPA and a secured spot on the Dean’s list  as well as Perfect Attendance

In John’s Own Words:

“I’m not the same person I was before Job Corps.  I used to be very shy and kept to myself.  Now – everyone refers to me as a “quiet storm” because I’ve grown personally and professionally.  They see it – but more importantly, I live it now everyday.”
