Schenck Job Corps Students Volunteer at DuPont State Forest

On June 18, thirteen students from Schenck Job Corps volunteered their time to help out at DuPont State Forest. Since the Maintenance Department at DuPont State Forest is currently understaffed, students from Schenck Job Corps offered their assistance.

The students conducted maintenance on the banks near one of DuPont’s parking areas, cutting back bushes and small trees. It was a warm one out there, but the students had plenty of energy and were dedicated to getting the job done. While some students cut back the vegetation, the other students dragged the brush over man-made trails and other eroded areas.

The Maintenance Supervisor for DuPont State Forest, Frank Cubero, spent the day working with the students on this project. Afterwards, he had this to say about his experience working with the Schenck students: “We are always excited to work with folks that are developing their skills and would like to continue to do so in the future. It’s a win-win situation; not only do these folks get the opportunity to develop their skills, but the people of North Carolina also receive the benefits of these community service projects.”

The students were extremely happy to help out at DuPont State Forest. Schenck student Maurice Haynes commented: “For me, it was a great experience to help out in the community, and I would like to do it again very soon.”  Another student, Justin Bickerstaff, expressed his willingness to volunteer again soon: “I will do it anytime they ask.” Many other Schenck students also conveyed their eagerness to volunteer more often as well. These students would love to hear about more community service projects in the future.
