Schenck Job Corps CCC Hosts 1st Annual Car Show

On October 22, the Student Government Association (SGA) from Schenck Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center hosted their first annual car show “Smokey Ridez” at the center. Approximately fifteen cars attended the event, with vehicles ranging from a 1964 Impala to a 2011 Shelby Mustang, which was brought out by EGOLF Ford. Trophies were awarded for four different categories: Best in Show, Student Choice, SGA Choice, and Best Motorcycle.

“Smokey Ridez” was not just about cars though; other entertainment was provided as well. Face painting and corn-hole games were available all day, and children were given the chance to shoot water out of Schenck’s Wildland Firefighting truck. Southern Smoke BBQ and the SJCCCC dining staff provided food for the event, while a local DJ, Vic Thomas, provided the music for the day.

Overall, students and community members thoroughly enjoyed Schenck’s first annual car show, and many are optimistic that many more cars will attend next year’s event. The Student Government Association (SGA) learned a lot from putting on their first event at the Schenck Job Corps Center. Genard Thorpe, the SGA President, commented: “It was a good experience. We are hopeful that more cars will come out next year.”

Staff members from the Schenck Job Corps Center were also pleased with Schenck’s first car show. Center Safety Officer, Wesley McCall, stated that the students really enjoyed the cars that came out. He commented: “Our goal is to make this an annual event, as we hope to build more ties with our community.” Center Director, Tammy Wentland, had this to say of the event: “It was a beautiful day for the event, and everyone that did participate really enjoyed the cars and other activities. For the first show I was pleased and know that we will continue to grow the event each year. I appreciate the community support and center support. I am extremely proud of our Student Government and all the effort they put into the event. I look forward to next year’s car show.”
