On June 9th, The Friends of Job Corps Congressional Caucus sponsored San Jose Job Corps Student, Lorena  Ruelas as she spent the day interning with staffers at Congressman Mike Honda’s district office as part of the first annual “Mentor a Job Corps Student Day.”

Lorena, age 18, came to the San Jose Job Corps  because “I was doing nothing with my life” and desired to continue her education and training in Culinary Arts. Lorena’s goal after leaving Job Corps is to enroll in college and study nutrition.  Her dream is to teach young people to shop, cook, and eat better by making healthier choices. Ultimately, she would like to develop after school programs for youth to have fun, exercise and to generally stay healthy.

Lorena is also very interested in government and political issues, some which include addressing the risks of texting while driving and legislation needed to keep people safe on the roads. She holds particular interest in immigration issues, in particular, the current “Dream Act.”
