San Jose’s Facility Maintenance Visit Carpenters Training Committee for Northern California

February 11, 2016

San Jose Job Corps’ Facility Maintenance students visited the training center of the Carpenters Training Committee for Northern California, located in Morgan Hill. The students were shown at least a dozen learning stations where apprentice carpenters learn the various aspects of the trade, including that of SAFTEY.

The Facility Maintenance students were encouraged to apply for the apprenticeship program. It should be noted that on average only one out of eight applicants gets accepted into the program and of those eight it is usually those HS students who went through a formal vocational program such as the ones which San Jose Job Corps has to offer.

When asked about the future employment prospects the students were happy to hear about the plan to create Silicon Valley’s hottest entertainment destination: 230 acres of Santana Row-style shops, restaurants and homes near Levis Stadium. There will be a great need for carpenters, electricians, welders, plumbers, fleet maintenance and the technical graphic designers, and many more career trades.

The visit to the training center was a great learning experience resulting a handful of students returning to center to begin the application process for the apprenticeship program with their Career Transition Specialist.
