Facilities Maintenance, Landscaping and GED students learn first- hand the real opportunities in the construction field.
Mr. Paul Hone, a project manager for Matt Construction spoke to students and staff on June 28th, 2011.
Mr. Hone just wrapped up work on a multi-million dollar project in Santa Clara, CA. He talked about how he became involved in the construction field, and provided insight into past and current projects that he is involved with, and the relevance of “workplace expectations” and “employment skills” needed to be successful in today’s competitive work world.
Of particular interest to our students was his insight on the different types of work opportunities and the workers involved in large scale construction projects. For example, he shared the roles and responsibilities of different construction teams (sub-contractors and crew), construction managers, and real estate investors. According to Paul “Most people think construction is some guy hammering nails, but it is really a lot more than that.”
Mr. Hone also discussed options and the education needed to get into the various fields and employment levels within the industry and specifically what employers look for during the hiring process. He emphasized the importance of first impressions and being on top of your game when interviewing.
