Faces of Job Corps – Daryl Demanawa

Daryl Demanawa came to the United States from the Philippines in 2008 to pursue a Mechanical Engineering Degree.  Employment became a priority for Daryl and he quickly realized he would better be able to obtain his dreams if he took a step by step approach.  He came to the San Jose Job Corps’ in July 2009 and enrolled in two trades (connected to mechanical engineering) , Facility Maintenance and Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC) as a means of supporting himself while he continues his college education.  Daryl’s accomplishments include:

  • Member of SIATech/San Jose Job Corps Robotics Team. He built two VEX robots to compete in the San Diego Regional Competition. One of his robots made it through the quarter finals. He also helped their team design a robot for FIRST Robotics Competition. The competition was held in UC Davis and their team won a silver medal.   
  • Daryl qualified for the Skills USA Regional Competition for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning in which he won a Silver Medal that qualified him for the Skills USA State Competition held in San Diego where he earned the bronze medal.
  • Daryl completed Work-Based learning on center where he assisted the Information Systems Administrator integrate and install a new phone system.  IT Administrator, Allan Navarro describes Daryl as respectful, honest, and friendly,  whose hard work and dedication shines throughout the center. 

Daryl’s advice for other Job Corp student’s, “Don’t listen to other students who will drag you into the wrong path.  Do what you are supposed to do to achieve your educational goals.”
