San Diego Job Corps Welcomes New Students

The San Diego Job Corps Center has begun admitting new students to its 27 acre campus in Imperial Beach, California.  All 125 Job Centers were ordered to halt admissions from Jan. 28th to June 30th as a cost-savings measure.  The U.S. Department of Labor, which administers the Job Corps program, recently lifted the freeze on admissions.

The San Diego Center was established in 1979 and offers free academic and career technical training to low income young people ages 16-24. 525 students are currently enrolled at the center which employs 230 staff members.  Students complete any one of the seventeen Career Technical Training courses in the Schools of Business and Hospitality, Health Care, and Construction.  They are also able to obtain a General Educational Development (GED) and/or High School diploma, and a driver’s license.  After graduation, 80% of Job Corps graduates secure employment, continue on to higher education, or enter the military.

While completing their Career Technical Training course, students also learn independent living, employability, and social skills to help them make a successful transition into the workplace.  Work-Based Learning (internships) assists students in gaining “hands-on” experience before beginning full-time employment. While at Job Corps students also “give back” to the community by contributing thousands of hours of community service throughout San Diego County.

Young adults interested in enrolling in the San Diego Job Center should contact the Admissions Office (619) 429-8500, ext. 430 or visit www.sandiego.jobcorps.gov or www.jobcorps.gov.  Tours of the center are conducted every Wednesday morning at 9:00am.
