San Diego Job Corps Graduate’s On-going Success

“Job Corps’ Plumbing instructor John Gallagher fueled my eagerness to learn and inspired me to become a plumber,” advised San Diego Job Corps graduate Jose Martinez.  “John and Randall Mann (Job Corps’ Electrical instructor) became my mentors.”

Mr. Martinez enrolled at Job Corps in 1998 after going through some difficult times.  “At 17 years old, I was at a pivotal point; go this way and continue the trend that I left, past the mountains into the desert, or go to a place of possibilities,” he stated.  “I realized I needed stability, direction, and to be with kids my own age. My mom and I learned about a place in San Diego were there was hope, a place to cultivate my abilities, and harness my eagerness to be part of something. Job Corps gave me a second chance,”

After earning his General Education Diploma and completing his Career Technical Training course in plumbing, Mr. Martinez began an apprenticeship as a Rotor Rooter plumber.  Eager to improve his knowledge and skills, he obtained a number of certifications in the plumbing industry, while working for Rotor Rooter and other companies.

Married with three children, Mr. Martinez currently works as a Senior Utility Technician for San Diego based Apex Companies, LLC.  A customer-focused company, Apex delivers environmental, health, safety, and engineering services to clients across the Unites States and abroad.  “I’m also continuing my education,” Mr. Martinez stated, “and will be obtaining my associates degree from Cuyamaca College in the near future.”

Mr. Martinez received praise from both of his former Job Corps instructors. “At least once a year Jose visits our center,” advised Mr. Mann.  “He talks to our students about his life and the importance of making positive changes, while encouraging them to pursue their education.  He stresses the importance of inter-personal skills and getting along with others.  It’s quite evident that his words inspire the students.”

“Jose came to Job Corps with a hunger for the program and a hunger to change his life,” stated Mr. Gallagher, who is also a Job Corps graduate. “He successfully completed the program and is continuing his success in the professional world.  Jose exemplifies Job Corps.”
