The student-organized American Red Cross blood drive at the San Diego Job Corps Center on March 14, 2011 resulted in the highest number of units of blood ever collected on center in one day.
“We’ve been having blood drives for the American Red Cross and the San Diego Blood Bank for years”, advised Claudia Chavez, Student Government Specialist, “but today’s total of 88 units was the highest number we’ve ever achieved.”
Throughout the day, more than a hundred students and staff donated blood at the two Red Cross mobile units set up on center. “While some of the students had given blood last year,” Ms. Chavez stated, “for many it was their first time. With the urgent need for blood in our community, so many students said it “felt good” to be able to help others. We have two more blood drives scheduled for the rest of the year,” she added, “and we’re on pace to set a center record.”
