“Sidewalk CPR” Highlights San Diego Job Corps’ Universal Safety Week Activities

“Safety education, and training are important components of Job Corps’ mission to help young people lead safe lives,” advised San Diego Job Corps Center’s Safety and Security Manager Don Hughes.  “Aspects of safety training encourages students to manage themselves safely during training hours and in their personal lives.”

Each June the San Diego Job Corps Center takes part in the National Job Corps sponsored Universal Safety Week designed to promote and increase safety awareness at Job Corps centers and the community.

“During Universal Safety Week, and throughout the entire month of June, we schedule special events as students and staff prepare for the summer break,” Hughes stated.  “Each year Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) provides us with one of their “crash cars”.  Seeing the crash car reminds everyone of the dangers of drunk driving, driving under the influence of drugs, or being distracted by cell phones, texting, or other electronic devices.”

“We have an excellent relationship with the American Red Cross as we host several blood drives each year,” advised Business Community Liaison Frank Buttino.  “Through our partnership with them we took part in the countywide Sidewalk Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) public education event on June 7th.  The Red Cross sent a staff member and volunteer to teach our students hands only CPR.”

“In working with our students, the Red Cross trainers emphasized the importance of learning CPR for their home or job,” Hughes stated, “and the possibility that they could save someone’s life in the future.”
