Sacramento Job Corps graduate and U S Veteran, Victoria (Tori) Ewing knows first-hand the opportunities available to young people through our program the United States Military. Tori committed to the Army in June 2008 and began preparing academically and physically until she was officially sworn in during the fall of 2009. Within three weeks she was in Fort Jackson, South Carolina in boot camp. Tori was thriving in her service, developing many friendships and settling into her job in Human Resources. After serving a year and a half, Tori suffered a torn hamstring injury and she was Honorably Discharged from the Army. She returned home feeling very sad, lost and depressed. While in physical therapy, she heard from a friend about Job Corps. Shortly after, she made another life changing decision and signed up. Within two weeks, she entered Sacramento Job Corps.
She chose Cement Masonry as a trade and has stated that she learned a lot from her instructor “Doc” Pickett. She loved the hard work and felt it was what she wanted to do. Tori had many accomplishments during her stay at Job Corps. She was a member of the 2011 Women’s Basketball team, champions of the Tucson, AZ basketball tournament. She participated on the Job Corps dance team and was the Sargent of Arms for her dorm. Perhaps her greatest accomplishment was being honored as The Most Outstanding Student awarded by Congressman John Garamendi during graduation in August 2012.
Upon graduation from Job Corps, Tori obtained a position with CC Myers Inc. using both her life experiences and trade skills, which she acknowledges as a blessing. She states, ” While I was a student many teachers looked after me to make sure I was doing what I came there to do… I can say I’m truly blessed for the staff of the Sacramento Job Corps for giving me a second chance at life, for helping me find a career and make something of myself.”
