SJCC honors 55 grads on Commencement Day

Local officials, business leaders, Job Corps staff and family members joined 55 students graduating from Sacramento Job Corps Center Aug. 30 as part of the National Job Corps Commencement Day. “The National Commencement Day is a great way to recognize our students’ achievements, resilience and perseverance at every center across the nation,” said SJCC Center Director Erica Evans. “It also allows us to acknowledge the legacy of former President Lyndon B. Johnson and appreciate the evolution of the Job Corps program since its inception.” Jamis Jones, director of student life at SJCC and graduation speaker for the event, urged graduates to “continue on with your career and go take on the world. I know you can do it,” Jones said, “because I was a graduate 30 years ago from the Los Angeles Job Corps.” Sacramento Vice Mayor Bonnie Pannell told graduates, “Now it’s time to continue on
with working, furthering your education at local colleges or entering the military.” Kenelma Gracia, who completed Clinical Medical Assistant, was valedictorian. Julius Harris, who completed Office Administration and Clinical Medical Assistant, received the Darrell Steinberg Most Outstanding Student award, and Victoria Koumariano, who completed Carpentry, received the Steinberg Most Improved Student award.
