The Arecibo Job Corps community has been marking its 60th anniversary with a sweet and refreshing twist. In a special event called “Sundae Day,” students have become servers to express their appreciation for staff and fellow students by serving up succulent ice cream sundaes during lunchtime.
From early morning hours, the atmosphere on campus was charged with excitement and anticipation. Students, with palpable enthusiasm, were preparing for a unique day. The anticipation grew as the final details were being worked out to surprise the staff and their peers.
At lunchtime, the dining hall was transformed into a place of celebration. A select group of students donned aprons and took their places behind a table laden with colorful toppings: vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream, accompanied by a variety of toppings that whetted the appetite and imagination.
With skill and smiles, the students served generous servings of ice cream, adding layers of sweetness with syrups, fresh fruit, cookie pieces and whipped cream. Not only were they creating delicious sundaes, but also moments of connection and camaraderie that encapsulated the spirit of the Arecibo Job Corps community.
Staff and students delighted in these frozen creations, enjoying not only the taste, but also the meaningful gesture behind each sundae served. It was evident that beyond the celebration, this event represented Job Corps’ ongoing commitment to providing enriching and memorable experiences for its students.
Arecibo Job Corps Director, Miguelina Torres, shared her enthusiasm for the event, highlighting the spirit of service and collaboration that defines the institution. “We are thrilled to celebrate this historic milestone with our students and staff. Sundae Day is not only a delicious tradition, but also a reminder of our dedication to creating an inclusive and rewarding learning environment.”
With the last bite of sundae devoured and smiles still visible on everyone’s faces, Sundae Day concluded, leaving behind sweet and lasting memories. Arecibo Job Corps continues its mission to empower its students and cultivate a sense of community that transcends the classroom and endures beyond 60 years of achievement.
