Red Rock Supports, Wear Orange Day for Gun Violence Awareness
Red Rock staff and students wore orange on Wear Orange Day, Thursday, June 2 to support Gun Violence Awareness. They wore orange garments and orange ribbons were handed out to each student during the morning sign in. Wear Orange Day coincides with National Gun Violence Awareness Day and evolved from a shooting death in Chicago. In January, 2013, Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year-old high school student from the south side of Chicago, marched in President Obama’s second inaugural parade. One week later, Hadiya was shot and killed. Orange is the color a group of Hadiya’s friends chose to wear to remember her life. They chose orange because that’s what hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others. What started in the south side high school to celebrate Hadiya has turned into a movement nationwide, to honor all lives cut short by gun violence.
