Red Rock students celebrate Black History Month


Human Service Worker advanced training students conducted a Black History Month program on Thursday, February 20. Each student presented a speech during an assembly featuring an African-American whom they felt was important in American history and to the civil rights movement. Those featured were Jackie Robinson, who broke racial barriers in baseball, Alicia Garza, civil rights activist, editorial writer and BlackLivesMatter movement, Naomi Campbell, American model and women empowerment activist, Malcolm X, civil rights activist, Louis Armstrong, musician, Phillis Wheatley, the first published African American poet, Queen Latifah, actress, record producer and rapper, Dorothy Dandridge, American singer and entertainer and US Civil War Army Sgt. William H. Carney, awarded the medal of Honor in 1900 for his gallantry in saving the regimental colors (American flag) during the Battle of Fort Wagner in 1863. Born a slave, the action for which he received the Medal of Honor preceded any other African American Medal of Honor
