Students had the opportunity to create innovative hair designs, honoring the conservation of the environment for a Green Crazy Hair competition. The evaluation criteria covered: recycled material, originality, design/difficulty, and color. The contest was open to all students on center. All the participants walked through the catwalk and only four were selected by four judges.
Green Art Exhibition:
This Green Art Exhibition was lead by the Center’s Art Instructor: Gladys Calvente. The exhibition, inspired in the environment, with the theme: Earth Day, Every Day”, was wall sculptures created with “papier mâché”. The Student’s works were done with recycled newspaper over wood as a base. The pieces were then illuminated with a variety of colors. The exhibition was also transmitted through local media in a visit of the Aguadilla city Major, Hon. Carlos Méndez.
Caring for Puerto Rico’s Resources:
The InterAmerican University offered a seminar to students of the Recycling Committee in commemoration of Puerto Rico’s flora and fauna. Students had the opportunity to learn about: (1) the importance of the Karstic zone in Guajataca Rain Forest, (2) Mata de Plátano Station: investigation about the Antille’s bats development, (3) The “Gasoducto” possible effects in Puerto Rico. Students also had the opportunity to see real fossils and meet green leaders from the island.
Earthquakes and Tsunamis:
The Aguadilla city Emergency Management Office brought city’s Emergency-Response Trainers who provided a specialized up-to-date training about earthquakes and tsunamis in Puerto Rico and the rest of the world. The movie: “Tsunami: a forgotten danger” was viewed and a drill was executed. Puerto Rico is located in a geographic zone were earth tremors are felt almost every day. The team accentuated the safest zones, important landmarks and shared emergency contacts for specialized assistance. Students and personnel participated of this event.
Office Paper Recycling:
The Recycling Committee, lead by Prof. Enidsa Arroyo visit every office and classroom on Fridays in order to collect office paper to recycle it. This paper is many times used by students for art projects or collected by Aguadilla city’s disposal entities. Students are very committed to this force and are motivated by the Instructor giving them the opportunities to represent the Ramey Job Corps Academy in green events in nearby cities.
