It is based on the purpose of the Job Corps Program which encourages youth to empower themselves through academic and vocational education. In the Program students are also acquiring a series of employability skills that will give them a better opportunity to be part of the labor force.
This award was given to a student that exceeded all goals and had an excellent overall performance in the Program. The Center’s Counseling Supervisor, Gabriel Soto, had the idea of creating this award and lead the special committee that evaluated the nominees for this prize and with the Center Director Osvaldo Ubiñas approval, the winner was selected.
Soto, explained, “This award is not limited to the academic and vocational merits, but our winner is an example of perseverance, encouragement and overall excellence”. All nominees were carefully evaluated through the Job Corps CIS Report System, which measured the student’s conduct, evaluation panel, action without leaves (absenteeism) and the student’s personal career plan. The Excellence Award 2015 was given to Jessica Gonzalez. She is a single mother that surpassed all expectation and demonstrated an outstanding performance in the Program, by effectively completing all the Career Success Standards and the Center’s Minimum Standards. These are fundamental, in the development of each student’s employability skills. Gonzalez is an example of this process. She completed the Medical Office Assistant Vocational Trade and then during her WBL (supervised practice) phase got the opportunity to work with the HR Team at Lufthansa Technik – Puerto Rico, the worldwide leading provider of services for the aviation industry that established in Ramey’s Community.
