Following the 2011 flood, Quentin N. Burdick Job Corps Center initiated discussions with community members, businesses and city leaders to determine what role the Center could play in the recovery process. Known in Minot as the SUMMER OF HOPE, efforts to “come back” are well underway. Burdick has committed time to a number of projects, with emphasis on the city’s parks. In the past weeks, students and instructors from the Facilities Maintenance and Carpentry trades have contributed 328 hours to nearby Oak Park. The Burdick crew cleaned the playground areas, painted the barbeque area, and stained the garbage can stands. Additionally, Carpentry students repaired over 60 picnic tables by replacing boards and sanding rough edges. Facilities Maintenance Instructor, Mike Frank reports that rebuilding and repairing the band shell is on the agenda for the near future. Burdick Job Corps Center is working in collaboration with Sertoma Park, Minot Parks and Recreation, and Minot Area Community Foundation to accomplish the recovery efforts. A Grand Opening was held on the anniversary of the flood, with a red ribbon cutting and church bells ringing throughout the community to commemorate the event. Welding students are fabricating a plaque stand to permanently mark the event.
