For months, the excitement and anticipation of the 2010 Philadelphia Region’s Job
Corps Academic Olympics district competition could be felt throughout the Potomac Job
Corps campus. This year, the Potomac center had the privilege of hosting the
competition at the National Harbor in Washington, D.C., on August 24.
Five teams from Job Corps Centers in Harpers Ferry, W. Va., Homestead, Fla., Kittrell,
N.C., Charleston, W. Va., and Washington, D.C., competed in a rigorous academic
challenge in areas of science, math, language arts, spelling and current events.
After several hours of competitive contest, the Potomac team lead the competition and
was announced the winners of the Eastern Region’s Academic Olympics.
“We have been working very hard for the past two months putting in two to three hours
each day and going over various subject areas and some college course work,” said
Eric Russell, one of the Potomac team members. “I am proud to say that all our hard
work has paid off and we are bringing the gold medal to our center.”
The Potomac team will receive several prizes, including cash incentives, and will
compete in the finals in Ocean City, Md., in October.
