The Potomac Job Corps celebrated Graduation Day of the Class of 2011 at the ARC in Washington, D.C. The Honorable Elizabeth Schuler, Secretary- Treasurer of the AFL-CIO, was the Chief Guest for the Ceremony and assisted in awarding Graduation Certificates to the 33 students of the Class of 2011. An atmosphere of pride and enthusiasm triumphed in the auditorium at The Town Hall Education, Arts & Recreation campus as students in traditional academic regalia went on stage to collect their certificates in the presence of family, friends, faculty and staff, alumni, board members and other union dignitaries.
Welcoming the Secretary – Treasurer, Brenda Young, Trade Program Coordinator said, “It is indeed a privilege for us to have the Honorable Elizabeth Schuler amidst us today. She has brought in several path-breaking initiatives to reform local unions.” The Secretary-Treasurer is the youngest and the only woman ever to have risen through the ranks of the AFL-CIO. Her many eloquent comments and thoughtful lessons were well received from the audience.
In addition to Secretary-Treasurer Schuler’s warm comments, the National Job Corps Director, Edna Primrose brought greetings from the national office. She praised the students for their great efforts and encouraged them to continue their success. Other dignitaries and community leaders included, Superior Court Judge Arthur Burnett, Maryland’s Apprenticeship Board Member, Rosie Pointer, and Chairman of the Veterans Commission for Prince George’s County and Pentagon Senior Acquisition Logistics Analyst, Henry Turner, Esq. shared comments and offered accolade to the students. And bidding farewell to the graduates, Center Director, Steven Belk said, “The lessons you have learned from our dedicated instructors, administrators and supporting staff at Potomac Job Corps and the habits you have developed will remain with you and guide you throughout your life. Remain true to them. Hold onto the idea of ‘service’ that is the groundwork of Potomac Job Corps Center.”
