Meet Amber Morrison

Hi, my name is Amber Morrison I’m 24 years old from Newark, NJ. I decided to go to the Job corps because I was at a crossroads in my life and I really didn’t know what to do next so my cousin told me she saw a commercial about job corps and that I should check it out. So I did. I heard about the job corps all through high school but never paid much attention to it because I thought it was mostly for guys and people who didn’t want to do high school anymore. So upon my research, I decided to apply and later was accepted into the Delaware valley job corps center in Callicoon, NY. There I took the trade of Hotel & Lodging. I wasn’t completely sold on that trade until I shadowed in the class for a week and I met my instructor Jessica Bishop. We quickly became close and she became not only a friend and someone I can depend on but a mentor. She knew I had my mindset on advanced training in Washington D.C. and she did everything in her power to get me there. I also accomplished so much while at DVJCC I received my license, bloodborne pathogen certification, Servsafe, and my C.P.R certification. Now I’m enrolled in the advanced training program TCU/IAM at Potomac Job Corps center where I will be receiving a double certification in Amtrak and in Airlines. My experience At PJCC has been way different from my last center. Due to Covid, I started my advanced training journey at home doing distance learning. Then when I arrived at the center at the end of June I didn’t think I was going to have a good time because the Center was empty but I was so wrong. I have found the perfect little family here and a group of individuals such as Ms. Pitts, Ms. Armstrong, Mrs. Marable, Ms. Briscoe, and Ms. Smith who has my best interest in mind. They push me to become a better version of myself and with all self-growth, you hate it at the moment but appreciate it in the end. I was a part of SGA in my last center but it wasn’t until I got here to PJCC where I became treasurer and the manager of the school store (Panther’s Pit). These roles have been important to my journey here because it’s giving me responsibility and teaching me professionalism not only in the workplace but in meeting settings etc. Under the leadership of Ms. Armstrong and Ms. Pitts, I have become more self-aware of how I speak to people and I’m working towards perfecting it every day. I’ve also learned how to advocate for myself and others in a way that is professional and that gets people’s attention to where they actually listen to the concerns we share from the student body. The training I’m receiving now will not only make me successful but a better person in the world.
