Pittsburgh Job Corps Student Shadows Congressman’s Staff

On June 9, 2011 House State Government Committee and the Senate State Government Committee held a Joint Legislative Hearing at a Congressional Redistricting meeting in Cranberry, PA.

Student Calvin M. and the Pittsburgh Business and Community Liaison were invited to attend the meeting with the staff from U.S. Congressman Jason Altmire’s local office.  They heard opening remarks by Senator McIhinney and commissioners from Butler, Lawrence, Warren, and Indiana Counties as well as testimony from professors at George Mason U. and U. of Pittsburgh.  Pennsylvania will lose a congressional seat next year and the open public forum is one of many planned for the area both to inform, educate, and listen to constituency concerns. Redistricting takes place every ten years. There also were eight additional representatives from the State on the panel.

Following the meeting , Calvin and the Business and Community Liaison proceeded to the local office of U.S. Congressman Jason Altmire in Aliquippa, PA.  There the staff introduced themselves and explained their duties.  Each had obligations to report weekly to the Congressman on any activity involving their area of specialty:  veterans issues, social security, home mortgages, community participation, and constituent interests. They also met with the District Director and her Deputy Director and were able to educate the staff about the Pittsburgh Job Corps Center.
